How to Write About Africa

Binyavanga is one of my favorite Kenyan authors of all time and I actually still have a few issues of Kwani? . In this book, he takes lazy language apart until the politics underneath has nowhere to hide. This belongs on the shelf as literature, yes, but also as a warning. Africa gets turned into a genre far too easily. Language is never innocent when it is describing other people.
