The Shadow King
Maaza Mengiste
Maaza Mengiste, in recent times, is one of my favorite authors from Eastern Africa for sure. This book explores Ethiopia, war, resistance, memory, and women carrying history while official history keeps trying to crop them out. This is the kind of novel that makes the archive feel political, because (of course) it is. Who gets remembered? Who gets used? Who survives the story other people later simplify?
